To make sure Lupa's life doesn't just pass into oblivon this is her short sad story. she was captured in 1968 (Her name is Latin for "female wolf.") She was the first and last orca ever displayed at the New York/Coney Island Aquarium. Upon arrival, she was 18 feet long and more than 5,800 pounds. Based on her size, Lupa was probably about 9-13 years old She was reportedly very aggressive with her trainers, She would chase people from her tank if they entered the water. When water level was lowered for pool cleaning, female Lupa sent trainers scrambling from the pool, snapping her jaws threateningly. Lupa died after just 7 months in captivity, on September 6, 1968 of a respiratory infection. Unfortunately, very few photos of her exist, as with many deceased captive cetaceans, but at least now the memory of her and her short sad captive life is known. — at Coney Island New York Aquarium.
