Famed house of Seven Gables purported to be haunted and was what the book (although fictitious) is somewhat about, the Ghost of Alice. This book started all, Haunted house tales and writings in the USA. The book was written in 1851 by Nathanial Hawthorn. The house also was owned by a relative of his. So he was in the house often. It is located in Salem Massachusetts USA. It is also said to be the oldest wood buildings in the United States having been built in 1668.

Although Hawthorn says it is a work of fiction, it does have a secret passage and other details he describes in his famous book, which are true.
