captive orca profiles 118 ran

Ran - was captured in Iceland in October 1989 and in 1990 Ran and Ai were bought by Nanki adventure World. They met Goro and Ruka and got on well. when Ai died in 1995 the park took 3 more orca from a Taiji drive hunt, a female and 2 young males. The female and one of the young males died within the month but a young male survived and was called Kyu. Kyu was very young and was kept in the back pool until he joined the show in 1999. In 2000 Ruka died leaving Ran with the 2 males. She soon became pregnant with Kyu's calf and gave birth to a daughter on August 26 2004. Sadly the calf was born prematurely and had a broken skull which resulted in her death 2 days later. Still exhausted from the birth Ran died the following day, after almost 15 years in captivity. According to the autopsy she died of pneumonia from microorganism, blood poisoning and acute gastritis. The birth obviously contributed to her death but the reason for the premature birth is unknown unless of course Ran was already sick which seems highly possible.
