UKA - was captured in Iceland on October 4th 1981. In November 1981 she was bought by Tierpark Hagenbeck a zoo in Hamburg Germany. People came to see her as Germany had never had a captive orca before, their taking went up, but after a few years the novelty of such a creature began to wear off and the park decided to sell her. In Feb 1985 she was moved to Nanki Shirahama Adventure World in Japan she met the resident bull Benkei and started to get used to her new surroundings. In the November they were both joined by Goro, a young orca and as Benkei died in the January of 1989, Ruka and Goro became the stars of the park. In the April of 1990 the group increaded again when Ai and Ran were purchased also from Iceland. Ruka was soon getting used to her tankmates dying when Ai died in 1995. In 1997 9 orcas were captured and 5 were kept in Taiji bay and a 3 year old male, a large female who appeared to be pregnant and Kyu another young male. The young male only stayed there for 3 months before he died. The adult female was indeed pregnant and suffered a miscarriage just after her arrival. She herself also died in the June of 1997. Kyu was kept separate from the others for a while but gradually was intergrated into their makeshift pod and finally performed with them. On March 29th 2000 just after a show Ruka sank to the bottom of the tank and never came up again. The cause of death was given as traumatic shock but the story is not fully told. The press at the time tried to get a story and accused the park of trying to hide the deaths, the also stated that they had witnessed trainers using whips during the shows to make the orca perform better, but no statement could be brought forth from the park.
